Purpose: To improve visual rehabilitation of cataract surgery in young patients.
Methods: In children, aged between 5 and 14 years old, with pathological or congenital cataracts, we performed Aqualase nuclear liquefaction, cortical removal and capsular polishing using the same hand piece. In all cases primary posterior capsulotomy was performed followed by anterior vitrectomy, when indicated. A multifocal IOL Acrysof ReSTOR was implanted in the bag, trying to achieve emmetropy. A video presentation of the surgeries will be presented.
Results: There were no intraoperatory complications. In the immediate postoperative period, cornea was clear with a minimal inflammatory response and the patients had a satisfactory near and far vision, without glasses.
Conclusion: Aqualase liquefaction allows a safer, and less aggressive, lens extraction in these soft cataracts, and improves cortical clean up. The implantation of a multifocal IOL also reduces the dependence of glasses in children. So we believe this approach is a good option to improve visual rehabilitation in young patients with cataract.
